Sweetgrass has many ceremonial uses among many Indian tribes and if often used in conjunction with sage.
The smoke is used for prayer, cleansing and as a healing agent. Sage is first burned to drive away any negative forces, then sweetgrass is burned to summon positive ones. It is frequently used in Sweat Lodge ceremonies, tied to traditional bundles and is used in a sachet for clothing. Sometimes known as Marsh Hay, and in Lakota it is called Sink'pe tawota. It is said to be pleasant smelling to all spirits and many people compare its scent to pineapple.
